Polska Grupa Biogazowa (PGB) and Hekla Energy have entered into a strategic agreement for the sale and trading of electricity generated from biogas. In the first year of cooperation, more than 200 GWh of green energy will be added to Hekla Energy’s portfolio, representing over 15 percent of Poland’s agricultural biogas-based electricity production. The agreement supports the European Union’s energy transition goals and enhances energy security for consumers.
It covers the sale of electricity from nearly all of PGB’s operating and newly constructed biogas plants. The contract marks the first agreement in Poland’s history for the large-scale sale of electricity generated from agricultural biogas. Polska Grupa Biogazowa currently operates 21 biogas plants with a total installed capacity of 22.5 MW, producing approximately 200 GWh of electricity annually. It is also a leader in biogas plant management, building on many years of experience and innovative technological solutions. All operating facilities are supervised from the Monitoring and Analysis Center (CMA), a solution unique in Europe, enabling remote monitoring and control of biogas plant operations.
The agreement between PGB and Hekla Energy aligns with EU climate and energy policy objectives, including climate neutrality targets, increasing the share of renewable energy sources, and the development of local, stable generation sources. As a dispatchable source, biogas is playing an increasingly important role in Europe’s energy system, supporting security of supply and grid resilience.
“Cooperation with Hekla Energy is not only business-driven, but also strategic in the context of Europe’s energy transition. Biogas is one of the key components in building a low-emission, stable energy system in the European Union. Through this agreement, we are able to provide customers with energy sourced from local renewable resources in a consistent, predictable, and long-term manner. This is particularly important for companies and institutions seeking security of supply, transparency of origin, and a tangible contribution to achieving ESG goals,” – says Sabine Dujacquier, President of the Management Board of Polska Grupa Biogazowa.
The cooperation will give PGB access to a broad range of trading products listed on the Polish Power Exchange, enabling further optimization of electricity sales and combined heat and power plant operations, as well as full use of PGB’s remote facility management capabilities.
Electricity generated by PGB’s biogas plants will now supply Hekla Energy’s customer portfolio, providing access to a stable energy source that effectively balances wind and solar generation, particularly during periods of increased variability in weather-dependent production. As a result, end customers benefit from greater price predictability, reduced exposure to market volatility, and access to energy with verified renewable origin.
Both parties emphasize the strategic nature of the partnership as a response to dynamic changes in the energy market, rising price volatility, and increasingly frequent periods of negative electricity prices. The cooperation enables PGB to gain access to new markets and sales models, which is critical amid growing competition and a volatile market environment.
Joint efforts in electricity trading will further optimize operational processes, reduce costs, and increase profitability, thereby enhancing the value of PGB’s asset portfolio.
“The growing number of periods with negative electricity prices, which affect the level of support available to producers under RES auction systems, certificate of origin mechanisms, or Feed-in-Premium schemes, is prompting the largest renewable energy producers to seek solutions that help them avoid selling electricity at unfavorable prices. Our cooperation with Polska Grupa Biogazowa is a highly interesting experience, allowing us to leverage our trading expertise and the advanced biogas plant management infrastructure developed by PGB. At this scale, the partnership has the potential to increase revenues by several million PLN annually,” – says Gracjan Grela, President of the Management Board of Hekla Energy.
Representatives of both entities underline that the cooperation also contributes to the development of the circular economy, the efficient use of agricultural waste, and the strengthening of local communities through investments in modern energy infrastructure.
About PGB
Polska Grupa Biogazowa (PGB) is the largest producer of electricity and heat from biogas in Poland, holding a 15% market share. PGB employs 200 people and operates 21 assets across the country. The company converts waste into electricity and heat through cogeneration, while producing biologically valuable digestate that improves soil properties. PGB’s annual production capacity exceeds 0.5 TWh of biomethane equivalent — enough to power more than 90,000 households.
PGB aims to reach a production level of 2 TWh by 2030, while simultaneously expanding its operations to the purification of biogas as to inject biomethane into the gas grid. The implementation of these plans will represent a significant contribution to the development of Poland’s renewable energy sector and the decarbonization of heat and power sources.
Founded in 2007, PGB has been part of TotalEnergies since 2023 and is a joint venture equally owned by TotalEnergies and HitecVision since 2025, combining the experience of a global leader in energy transition with the capital and know-how of one of Europe’s leading renewable energy investors.
About Hekla Energy
Hekla Energy is one of Poland’s largest independent energy companies specializing exclusively in the supply of renewable energy. It employs over 50 people and provides energy to over 23,000 business and institutional customers across Poland. The energy supplied is sourced from a portfolio of more than 1,000 partner renewable energy installations — including wind farms, photovoltaic farms, biogas plants, and hydropower plants — with a combined capacity exceeding 1.6 GWp, equivalent to powering more than one million households.
Its numerous clients include local government entities such as the City of Częstochowa and the City of Tychy. Hekla Energy also supplies green energy for Warsaw’s street lighting and traffic signal systems, as well as for the construction of the Central Communication Port. It places strong emphasis on supporting the green transformation of transport, supplying more than 30% of Poland’s publicly accessible EV charging stations, as well as tram and trolleybus networks.
