Biogas in Poland: Polska Grupa Biogazowa is commissioning a New Biogas Plant, marking another step in PGB’s strategy for the biogas sector in Poland

  • On May 28, 2025, Polska Grupa Biogazowa (PGB), a TotalEnergies company, commissioned its 21st biogas plant in Gogolin, in Opole Voivodeship in Poland.

  • This new facility marks a significant step in advancing renewable energy and strengthening Poland’s energy independence, while operating on circular economy principles to promote sustainable, low-carbon solutions.

Energy that powers the region

The biogas plant in Gogolin has a capacity of 1 MW and is capable of producing about 9 GWh of electricity annually. This amount of energy is enough to meet the needs of 3,000 households. The plant also generates 8.4 GWh of heat per year, which can be used to service wood drying.

PGB currently owns and operates twenty-one biogas plants with a total installed capacity of 22 MW, which has the capacity to produce nearly 192 GWh of electricity to power about 69,000 Polish households. PGB’s goal is to reach 2 TWh of biomethane generation capacity equivalent by 2030.

Waste as a source of energy

Gogolin uses anaerobic digestion technology. Organic waste such as liquid manure, silage, slurry, and other residues from agricultural production or food processing goes into closed digesters where it is broken down by bacteria. The process produces biogas, consisting mainly of methane and carbon dioxide. The gas powers the gas engine of the cogeneration unit, which drives the generator. This creates renewable energy that saves up to 4 tons of CO₂ emissions per year compared to the conventional method of obtaining electricity.

” The investment process was long and demanding, so I am even more pleased that we can officially open the new biogas plant in Gogolin. Biogas is a stable and reliable source of energy. As a local government official, formerly in charge of environmental issues, I have long recognized the potential of such installations. Together with the Polska Grupa Biogazowa, we want to break stereotypes and change the public perception of biogas plants. We want to show that it is possible to produce a valuable raw material from seemingly useless by-products, which, after appropriate processing, becomes extremely valuable in obtaining energy, – says Krzysztof Reinert, Mayor of Gogolin, during the grand opening of the biogas plant.

Strengthening the local economy

The new biogas plant not only generates renewable energy but also strengthens the local economy by providing nearby farmers with a stable income through the supply of organic raw materials. Additionally, the digestate produced through anaerobic fermentation serves as a nutrient-rich organic fertilizer, contributing to more sustainable, regenerative agricultural practices.

TotalEnergies and PGB jointly for climate neutrality

” With the commissioning of another biogas plant PGB supports Poland’s energy transition. Biogas is a technology that combines local resources, environmental concerns and tangible social benefits. This makes energy greener and is another step toward stabilizing Poland’s energy mix  says Łukasz Semeniuk, CEO of PGB.

About Polska Grupa Biogazowa

PGB is the market leader in Poland in the field of combined production of electricity and heat from biogas. With over 200 staff, it has been part of the global multi-energy company TotalEnergies since April 2023. TotalEnergies is a major biomethane producer in France, also developing positions in the United States. The Company’s objective is a 20% share of low carbon energies in its sales mix by 2030.

PGB began operations in 2007, initiated by specialists with extensive experience in renewables. Its core activity is the production of biogas from agricultural organic waste and its transformation in renewable electricity and heat – and ultimately in biomethane to be injected into the gas network –, while adhering to the highest safety and sustainability standards.

PGB currently owns and operates 21 biogas plants located in 10 regions of Poland, with 2 new units under construction. It also provides services related to this production: in line with the principles of a circular economy, PGB offers farms the management of organic waste and the use of digestate for crop fertilization. Additionally, most PGB facilities are equipped with modern and environmentally friendly wood-drying systems. These currently include 47 chamber dryers and 6 belt dryers.

TotalEnergies and Biogas

A major player in the sector in France with now more than 800 GWh of biogas production capacity, TotalEnergies aims to continue its growth in Europe and the United States by partnering with leading companies, including Vanguard Renewables and Clean Energy in the United States. The Company is present across the entire value chain, from project development to the commercialization of this renewable gas and its by-products (biofertilizers, bioCO2). It aims for a gross capacity of 10 TWh equivalent biomethane per year by 2030 – equivalent to the average annual consumption of 1.6 million inhabitants and a reduction of CO2 emissions by 1.6 million tons.

TotalEnergies in Poland

TotalEnergies has been present in Poland since 1992 and currently engages in the production and sale of notably renewables and low carbon molecules, fuels, special fluids, additives, and bitumen. Its subsidiary Hutchinson operates 7 production sites in the country, and TotalEnergies owns 32 AS24 service stations. In 2023, TotalEnergies acquired PGB (Polska Grupa Biogazowa), which now holds over 15% of the biogas market in Poland with an installed capacity of 23 MW (including 2 MW solar plants). Since acquiring NovEnergia in April 2019, TotalEnergies has been active in onshore renewable energies in Poland, with 40 MW of wind power in operation, 206 MW of solar power, and 189 MW of wind capacity under development. In April 2025, TotalEnergies acquired VSB, a company with 84 MW of installed wind capacity and several projects under development.
