Polska Grupa Biogazowa has many years of experience in designing, building, operating and managing biogas plants in many regions of Poland.
What is a biogas plant and how does it work? What impact does the plant have on the local community?
How does a biogas plant work?
An agricultural biogas combined heat and power plant (commonly referred to as an agricultural biogas plant) is used to produce biogas which, in addition to the sun, water and wind, forms a renewable energy source. Biogas production makes it possible to manage bio-waste (“biomass”) in an ecological and safe way, and convert it into electricity and heat.
Biogas is produced as a result of anaerobic methane fermentation, and the substrate used to produce it is biomass from agri-food processing and agriculture, such as silage from energy crops (e.g. corn, grass, rye), waste from agri-food processing (e.g. beet pulp, fruit and vegetable mulch), slurry, manure, etc. Raw materials are obtained from local production and processing plants as well as from farms.
Combined heat and power plants for agricultural biogas are an alternative to fossil fuels (e.g. coal), the combustion of which in a combined heat and power plants or in households causes huge amounts of pollution and consequently irreversible climate change. Disturbing climate change has become a reality – nowadays it is visible as prolonged droughts or sudden atmospheric events.
Energy transformation and increasing the share of renewable energy sources, including agricultural biogas plants, are becoming an absolute necessity.
Biogas production process
At the stage of designing the plant and later during its operation, we apply modern and ef-fective technological solutions, as used in European markets.
Is the biogas plant safe for the environment?
Biogas plants are 100% safe for the environment and local inhabitants. The design, construction and subsequent operation of biogas plants are strictly regulated by law. Before the start up of a biogas plant, it is thoroughly checked by external inspection bodies. The operational capability and safety of the installation is confirmed by a permit for use, issued by the competent authorities.
In the power plants of Polska Grupa Biogazowa, the biogas production process is supervised by a team of experienced and qualified experts, including engineers, biotechnologists, automation specialists, service technicians and operators.
The operation of the biogas plant has no negative impact on the environment; it is carried out in the vicinity of crops and animal husbandry. It also has no negative impact on human health.
The functioning of the biogas plant does not cause water, air or soil pollution. The plants do emit no harmful dusts and gases into the atmosphere.
How can local inhabitants benefit from operation of a biogas plant?
PGB biogas plants are being built in many regions of Poland, for which the operation of such a plant is an opportunity to develop and build the image of a modern green municipality.
The heat generated in biogas plants can be supplied to local households and local businesses.
It is an opportunity to benefit from ecological heat, which has been produced in a way that is harmless to man and the environment.
Cooperation with local farmers
Farmers and businesses can supply biomass from local agriculture, husbandry and pro-cessing industry.
Local farmers can use the digestate
The digestate contains a high nutrient content and can constitute an excellent substitute to the artificial fertilisers used in agriculture. It is an excellent crop-supporting agent, and also helps retain water in the soil.
Cooperation with local businesses
The potential to dry wood based on an ecological heat source is an option available to wood industry companies. PGB also uses local transport and agricultural services.
New jobs
The team of biogas plant operators is recruited on the local labour market.
